Old North Road Passing Lane
This 1.0 km project on SH1 north of Whangarei involved widening to provide a southbound passing lane and realignment to address the poor safety record.
A Flexible Approach
The geotechnically active slopes had resulted in longstanding movement in the road and on-going maintenance issues. The section of road had complex geotechnical foundation conditions that required a flexible and proactive approach to adapt the design to accommodate the complexity as it was revealed during the wall construction.
A Cultural Icon
The project features two expansive panel retaining walls, reaching heights of 5.0m covering a distance of over 330m between them. Displayed along these walls is an iconic design representing the local short fin eel that was a valued food source of the local iwi and once widespread in the land overlooked by the walls.
