Lower Hatea River Crossing
Three Roundabouts & Road Network
An Iconic Design
The 260m span bridge crosses the upper Whangarei Harbour. A lifting bascule span has been incorporated into the bridge to allow yachts and other large craft to pass, providing access to and from mooring and maintenance facilities. The bascule span was designed to provide an iconic form that will in itself be a tourist attraction.
A Unique Challenge
The project included 1.8km of roading and three roundabouts linking with the road network. The project presented difficult challenges as it traversed the Pohe Island landfill and deep marine sediments that required solutions to the unpredictable ground conditions.
The Lower Hatea River Crossing project has become an iconic landmark of Whangarei. In 2014 the project was awarded the Supreme Award in the NZ Engineering Excellence Awards along with the Transportation Infrastructure Award.
A Highly Valued Partner
NCC was engaged by McConnell Dowell and Transfield as the design consultants for the three roundabouts and approach roads. The project was a design and build contract where our ability to respond quickly with innovation, build ability, accurate construction estimates and to budget was highly valued.
