SH1 Brynderwyn Safe Systems

Navigating Complex Geometry and Geology

This project involved a challenging 5.0km stretch on the north face of the SH1 Brynderwyn Hills, located south of Whangarei. The primary objective was to enhance safety for road users on this critical section of the state highway, addressing both the natural complexities of the terrain and the need for safer driving conditions. The steep and winding nature of the Brynderwyn Hills presented unique challenges, requiring careful planning and execution to ensure that the upgrades would effectively reduce risks and improve the overall driving experience.

Realigning and Widening for Enhanced Safety

To achieve the project’s safety goals, the existing road was realigned to better suit the natural landscape and traffic demands. Key improvements included widening the road to provide more space for vehicles, particularly in high-risk areas. Tight corners near the top of the hill were removed to create smoother, more navigable curves, significantly reducing the likelihood of accidents.

The project also involved substantial earthworks of approximately 800,000m³, the construction of seven major MSE walls, and the management of challenging valleys, all while carefully addressing the ecological impacts of the area.

Median Wire Rope Barrier Implementation

Additionally, a median wire rope barrier was installed to prevent head-on collisions, further enhancing the safety of the route.

As a supplementary benefit, the project also included the development of a new lookout point offering panoramic views over Bream Bay, the Hen and Chicken Islands, and the Waipu Plains. This addition not only improves the aesthetic appeal of the drive but also provides a safe place for drivers to stop and enjoy the scenic beauty of the region.
