SH2 / Northern Corridor

Safe System Study - SH2 / North of Tauranga

NCC was engaged to produce a feasibility report for improving safety and efficiency on State Highway 2, north of Tauranga. The report, now being implemented, has progressed to the construction phase.

Project Overview

This section of the highway is under increasing pressure due to the region's growth and Tauranga's strategic importance for the port, logging, farming, and tourism industries. The highway has seen a rise in severe crashes, highlighting the need for improvements.

Project Goals

The project aims to enhance safety and efficiency on SH2 through a structured, safe systems approach. The route will be divided into sections, each assessed for key issues, risks, and constraints. A tailored treatment strategy will be developed for each section, prioritized by safety, strategic importance, and route efficiency.

Key Tasks:

  • Define section boundaries based on issues and constraints.

  • Identify risks and challenges for each section.

  • Propose safety and efficiency improvements.

  • Develop a treatment strategy and rank sections by priority.
