WUI: SH14 Intersection Upgrade

SH1/SH14 Intersection Improvements

As part of the Whangarei Urban Improvements (WUI), comprehensive upgrades were carried out at the SH1/SH14 intersection, a critical juncture known for its high traffic volumes and congestion.

The project focused on enhancing both traffic flow and safety for all users by widening the intersection enhancing the layout and optimizing traffic signal timing, the project significantly increased the intersection's vehicle capacity, leading to smoother traffic flow, reduced congestion, and improved overall efficiency for commuters and freight transport alike.

Upgraded Traffic Signal System

A modernized traffic signal system was introduced to optimize signal timing and reduce delays during peak hours, while dedicated left-turn lanes were added on each approach to streamline vehicle movements and minimize congestion. Additionally, raised median islands were installed to separate traffic flows, further improving safety for both motorists and pedestrians.

Early Contractor Involvement / Initial Enabling Works

As part of these upgrades, essential early works addressed the existing stormwater management and traffic signal infrastructure. The stormwater facilities were upgraded to handle increased runoff more efficiently, and outdated traffic signals were replaced with a more reliable system to ensure smoother and safer operations at this busy intersection. These early contractor involvement (ECI) works were critical in laying the foundation for broader intersection improvements and ensuring the long-term functionality of the project.
