Bay of Islands Airport

Airport / Runway Upgrade (Kerikeri)

Enhancing Runway Capacity

To support the increasing demand for air travel, the runway at Bay of Islands Airport (Kerikeri) was reinforced to accommodate heavier aircraft, and the taxiways were expanded. Improvements were also made to the terminal, car parking and access facilities.

Serving the Bay of Islands / Kerikeri area, the airport has experienced a significant rise in tourist activity. With attractions like Kauri Cliffs driving more visitors, the airport has seen a growing number of private jets and heavier aircraft.

A Comprehensive Plan

NCC conducted a thorough evaluation of the runway's pavement strength and developed a detailed plan to extend its lifespan, ensuring it meets the future needs of air traffic. To bolster the pavement’s durability, enhancements were made including improved drainage, increased pavement depth, and stabilisation techniques. A structural asphalt layer was added to the surface, and the taxiways were lengthened to handle larger aircraft and higher traffic volumes.
