Waipapa Roundabout
SH10 Waipapa Corridor Improvements
Waipapa, located on SH10 west of Kerikeri, has seen rapid growth, prompting the completion of the SH10 Waipapa Corridor Improvements project in October 2021. The project introduced a new roundabout and upgrades to the town’s roading network to enhance safety and access.
Previously, the intersection of SH10 and Waipapa Road faced safety and congestion issues, particularly during peak times. The area was also challenging for pedestrians and cyclists due to high vehicle speeds and limited crossing points.
Benefits
The project has made turning at the intersection safer, reduced congestion, calmed traffic through the town centre, and improved pedestrian and cyclist access. These improvements support Waipapa's growth, enhance local job creation, and contribute to the broader economic development of Northland, including tourism along the Twin Coast Discovery Route.
Key Improvements included:
New Roundabout: A single-lane roundabout was constructed at the SH10, Waipapa Road, and Waipapa Loop Road intersection.
Alternative Route: Maritime Lane was extended to connect with Klinac Lane, providing a new link between the southern and northern sections of the township.
Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety: Improved pathways and crossing points were introduced, and the northern end of Waipapa Loop Road was closed to prevent unsafe traffic movements.
Infrastructure Upgrades: The stormwater system was upgraded, and power cables were relocated underground with new fibre optic cables for ultra-fast broadband.
