SH1 Akerama Realignment
Additional Passing Lanes and Curve Reduction
The Akerama Improvements project focused on a 3km section of SH1 near Hukerenui, approximately 35km north of Whangārei, from Barnes Road to Rusk Road. This safety improvement initiative also extended the northbound passing lane and added two new southbound lanesand the removal of tight corners to improve traffic flow and safety.
To acheive this, construction of significant MSE (Mechanically Stabilized Earth) embankments, with over 30,000m³ of earth moved and embankments reaching heights of up to 20m. These MSE embankments were critical in supporting the road structure on steep terrain, ensuring long-term stability and safety for the upgraded highway section.
Significant Wetland Challenges
The route traverses a significant wetland area, presenting various ecological challenges. To mitigate environmental impacts, a new wetland designed by NZ's top mudfish ecologist and was recognised as the largest and most successful man-made wetland in New Zealand at the completion of the build
Erosion and sediment controls were implemented, and we collaborated closely with an ecologist, local iwi and the Northland Regional Council (NRC) to ensure best practices during construction.
