SH10/SH11 Puketona Roundabout
Intersection Upgrade and Safety Enhancements
The SH10/11 intersection at Puketona was upgraded to a roundabout to enhance safety and access for all road users at this critical junction on the Twin Coast Discovery Highway Route.
Puketona Junction, located on the Twin Coast Discovery Route, had a history of safety concerns due to the high volume of turning traffic accessing the Bay of Islands. The upgrade to a roundabout significantly improved safety and access by reducing the frequency of road closures caused by accidents, thereby increasing resilience across the Northland region, especially since this intersection serves as part of the detour route for State Highway 1.
A Safe Systems Design Approach
The roundabout was designed using a safe system approach, effectively reducing the risk of death and serious injury at the intersection of State Highway 10 and State Highway 11.
The project’s enhancements to access and connectivity, coupled with these safety improvements, have improved the overall user experience for those traveling the Twin Coast Discovery Route and onward to the Bay of Islands. Additionally, the upgraded intersection supports increased tourist activity in the region by providing safer and more reliable access for visitors.
