This 1 km project on SH1 north of Whangarei involved widening to provide a southbound passing lane and realignment to address the poor safety record. A flexible approach The geotechnically active slopes had resulted in longstanding movement in the road and on-going maintenance issues. The section of road had complex geotechnical foundation conditions that required a flexible and proactive approach to adapt the design to accommodate the complexity as it was revealed during the wall construction.
